Prospective study of 2606 British women median age 75
years followed up for a median
duration of 3.7 years
Subjects were part of a bisphosphonate trial
312 incident osteoporotic fractures and 92 incident hip
fractures
The risk of osteoporotic fracture was slightly less in
the highest quartile of serum
retinol
Multivitamin or cod liver oil use was associated with a
significantly lower risk of
any fracture
We suggest that there is not sufficient evidence to
support the elimination
of retinol supplements or restriction of dietary intake of pre-formed retinol or beta-carotene on the
basis of skeletal
risk
